A TINY PIECE OF SKY
Earphones Award Winner
by Shawn K. Stout | Read by Tara Sands, Shawn K. Stout
Children Ages 8+ • 8.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2016
Narrator Tara Sands offers a memorable performance with this story of three sisters, one restaurant, and a possible German spy. During the summer of 1939, things are changing. The Baum family has decided to open a restaurant, which means that youngest sister Frankie is always in the kitchen. When rumors that her father might possibly be a German spy start to circulate, Frankie knows she has to investigate and uncover the truth. Sands deftly portrays spunky Frankie, thoughtful older sister Elizabeth, and energetic middle sister Joan. She ensures that the sisters' relationship--full of love and occasional frustrations--rings true. She also handles the supporting cast with ease, creating lively and engaging characters, and keeps the tension high as questions arise and tragedy abounds. S.B.T. Narrating the Sammy Keyes series over the past 15 years or so has been
such an honor. So, to get this lovely review is just icing on that cake!
SAMMY KEYES AND THE POWER OF JUSTICE JACK
Earphones Award Winner
by Wendelin Van Draanen | Read by Tara Sands
Children Ages 8+ • 7.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012
Tara Sands's distinctive narration shows a deep understanding of Sammy Keyes, the multidimensional heroine of this series. Sands is attuned to Sammy's empathy as the young investigator tries to determine whether an eccentric crime fighter in her town is a fake and help her BFFs untangle their relationship problems. Sands's rich portrayal of Sammy's bright and inquisitive nature shines as the middle-school detective seeks a missing woman and the cash that's disappeared with her. Despite the story's many characters, Sands's portrayals are individual and complex, and she deftly transitions between them. In addition, she conveys the author's sly ironic humor and the story's high-speed pacing. New listeners will join in easily, and Sammy's fans will love seeing how she's changing and growing. S.W. Another big THANK YOU to Audiofile Magazine for this sweet review for this sweet children's book...
THE SECRET LIFE OF TUMKIT
by Billy Garrett | Read by Tara Sands
Children Ages 4-6 • 1.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2014
Tara Sands deftly conveys each interaction,
whether warm and charming or frightening, with the many animals in this
delightful tale. Because rabbit Tumkit is the runt of the litter, he
must work hard to survive. His sweet baby voice immediately wins
listeners. Sands zestfully portrays the sights, smells, and sounds as
Tumkit emerges from his burrow. When he must fend for himself and nearly
starves, his fear is evident. Soon Tumkit is rescued by Sands's best
creation, Vella, a bossy but wise mockingbird who has a magic berry that
will save him. As he thrives, Tumkit meets a croaky frog, a raspy
grizzly bear, and a kind deer. The story demonstrates to young listeners
that size is no indication of one's potential. S.G.B. © AudioFile
